Liability Coverage: The Foundation
Every state except New Hampshire requires liability insurance. It covers damage you cause to others — bodily injury and property damage. Most states require minimums like 25/50/25 ($25K per person injury, $50K per accident injury, $25K property). Experts recommend at least 100/300/100 to protect your assets.
Collision and Comprehensive
Collision covers your car in an accident regardless of fault. Comprehensive covers theft, weather, vandalism, and animal strikes. Both are required if you have a car loan. For older cars worth less than $4,000, dropping these coverages (and the $500-1000 deductible) may save more than they'd ever pay out.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
About 14% of U.S. drivers are uninsured. UM/UIM coverage protects you if they cause an accident. Many insurance experts consider this the most important optional coverage because it directly protects you and your passengers from financial devastation caused by someone else's irresponsibility.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and MedPay
PIP covers medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses regardless of fault. Required in no-fault states. MedPay is similar but only covers medical bills. If you have good health insurance, you may need less PIP/MedPay, but it can still cover deductibles and copays after an accident.
Gap Insurance
If your car is totaled, insurance pays its current market value — which may be less than what you owe on your loan. Gap insurance covers the difference. Essential for new cars that depreciate quickly (losing 20%+ in year one) or if you made a small down payment. Skip it once your loan balance is below your car's value.
Roadside Assistance and Rental Reimbursement
Roadside assistance through your insurer costs $2-5/month and covers towing, flat tires, jump starts, and lockouts. Rental reimbursement ($3-8/month) covers a rental car while yours is being repaired. Both are cheap and convenient, but check if your credit card or AAA membership already provides these benefits.
